2017 Awards Program

October 5, 2017

Baltimore, MD — The Maryland Center for Character Education at Stevenson University (MCCE@SU) is dedicated to making an ethical difference in the lives of individuals and the entire community through education. The Center encourages teachers and administrators, in public and private schools to teach, model, and reinforce moral values and ethical behavior.

On Thursday, October 5th the Maryland Center for Character Education at Stevenson University held their annual Awards Luncheon and Program at Stevenson University, Owings Mills Campus, Rockland Center.

In partnership with the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) and CHARACTER.ORG, the Maryland Center for Character Education at Stevenson University (MCCE@SU) honored and awarded 63 schools from throughout Maryland with a School of the Year Award and banner for promoting character education within their schools and communities.. The awards program recognizes schools or districts that demonstrate an outstanding character education initiative yielding positive results in student behavior, school climate, and academic performance. Schools are selected by their county Superintendent and/or their Character Education Coordinator.

This year we also recognized and honored Maryland schools that received a State School of Character (SSOC) Award from CHARACTER.ORG.

This year Maryland's 2017 Teacher of the Year, Athanasia (Sia) Kyriakakos, an Art Teacher at Baltimore City’s Mergenthaler Vocational Technical High School shared her experiences with her students. Sia shared an emotional path one of her students took and how we can't let our kids slip through the cracks.

Our 2017 MCCE@SU Awards Program was a great success. Thanks go out to Stevenson University for hosting our event and to the schools for their outstanding job with Character Education. Keep up the great work!

A special thank you goes out to our photographer, Carde Cornish for a wonderful job of capturing the energy, enthusiasm, and passion of our event.
